The Ultimate Boat Trailer Corrosion Protection with Rust Grip®
Rust Grip®: The Toughest Corrosion Protection on the Planet
When it comes to corrosion protection, especially for demanding environments like boat trailers exposed to saltwater and salty air, Rust Grip® stands unmatched. Manufactured to combat extreme corrosion challenges, it has been rated the #1 corrosion encapsulation coating for a reason. Whether it’s for industries, infrastructure, or custom-built trailers, Rust Grip® offers a proven solution that ensures long-term durability and peace of mind.
Wherever it is applied, it “encapsulates” the surface by sealing off any air and moisture penetration by having only a 0.24 permeability. Very unique industrial grade coating for stopping corrosion development and gives long term boat trailer protection.
Why Rust Grip® is the Best Choice for Boat Trailers
1. Unrivalled Corrosion Protection
- Rust Grip® forms an impenetrable barrier that seals surfaces, blocking moisture and air to stop corrosion at its source.
- Perfect for environments with saltwater exposure, like Australia’s coastal conditions.
2. Exceptional Durability
- With a surface tensile strength of 6780psi / 470 bar surface, Rust Grip® is engineered to withstand extreme wear, weather, and abrasion.
- Designed for trailers regularly exposed to regular submersion in saltwater or salt envrionments.
3. Simple and Flexible Application
- Rust Grip® is easy to apply using a brush, roller, or spray gun.
- Requires just one coat without the need for primers, making it cost- and time-efficient.
How Much Rust Grip® Will You Need?
For a 7.3-metre boat trailer, you will need approximately 1 litre per 18.6 square metres. A 19-litre pail will provide more than enough coverage for multiple applications or additional equipment.
Affordable and Long-Lasting
Investing in Rust Grip® ensures your boat trailer is protected for the long term, reducing costly maintenance and replacement needs.
Rust Grip® is trusted worldwide for the toughest corrosion challenges. Have a 19-litre pail shipped to your location and experience the difference!
Surface Preparation for Rust Grip® Application
Proper surface preparation is key to maximising the performance of Rust Grip®. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Rust Removal
- Rust Grip® bonds directly to rust, so light surface rust does not need complete removal.
- For heavy pack rust scaling or loose particles:
- Use a wire brush or grinder.
- Ensure only solid, tightly-adhering rust remains.
- Rust Grip® performs best on prepared surfaces free of flaky or loose material. While it doesn’t require pristine conditions, addressing heavily deteriorated areas ensures longevity and maximum performance.
2. Clean the Surface
- Remove all dirt, grease, oil, or contaminants using a degreaser or cleaner.
- With the surface preparation, if you’re under tight environmental controls, we’ve had applicators use citrus cleaners (ie Bunnings) for surface preparation.
- For marine environments, ensure all salt deposits are thoroughly washed off with fresh water. We’ve found a mixture of vinegar and detergent and water combination or Chlor Rid may work.
- An alternative to Chlor Rid – read study in removing surface salt contamination, just add a bit of vinegar and detergent to water to have the same effect as mentioned above.
- Before application of Rust Grip®, the surface must be 100% dry, if not the application will fail.
3. Surface Profile
- Ensure the surface has a rough texture for optimal adhesion.
- Achieve this by lightly sanding or abrasive blasting, but it’s not always necessary if rust provides a sufficient profile.
4. Hot Dip Galvanised or Zinc Coatings
- Zinc: If a trailer cannot be blasted or you can’t pressure clean or treat the area. With fresh Zinc coatings, Rust Grip® cannot penetrate to adhere to the substrate. The coating will need to be abraded. This refers to the process of wearing down or roughening a surface by friction or scraping. This technique is commonly used to prepare a surface for coating or painting to ensure better adhesion of the material being applied. NOTE: Zinc rich primers >/= to 8.2 kilo of organic zinc per gallon should be removed by sandblast, hand or power tool prior to application of Rust Grip®. Also, surface should be allowed to develop surface rust as the profile before applying Rust Grip®.
- Galvanisation doesn’t anchor itself inside the pores of the metal, but stays on the surface and has a strong surface structure. Same as the zinc coating, abrading the new galvanised surface is crucial for success. A surface coated with Rust Grip® is strong and resilient. It is a durable coating that offers long life in extreme conditions, outperforming galvanised surfaces. It’s designed to last over 20 years or more in the toughest environments without a topcoat. Weathered galvanised surfaces need to be cleaned and as the surface is broken up it will make Rust Grip® easier to anchor through to the substrate.
4. Dry the Surface
- The surface must be completely dry before applying Rust Grip®.
- Do not apply to wet or damp surfaces, as this will compromise adhesion. If surfaces can’t be dried then Moist Metal Grip will be the better option.
5. Masking and Coverage
- Protect areas you don’t want coated by masking them off with tape or plastic sheeting.
6. Safety Equipment for Applying Rust Grip®
- When working with Rust Grip®, it’s important to prioritise safety by using the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Rust Grip® contains active chemicals, so taking proper precautions ensures a safe application process. Follow the SDS for safe application.
By following these steps, Rust Grip® will provide a durable, long-lasting barrier against corrosion in even the harshest environments.
FAQs
Q: How do I apply Rust Grip®?
A: Use a brush, roller, or spray gun for an even coat. A hard brush or roller is ideal as it ‘pushes’ the coating into the cracks and pores of the metal ensuring better adhesion.
Q: How much do I need for a 7.3-metre boat trailer?
A: 1 litre equals approximately 2.5m2 – 3.3m2 per litre depending on the profile depth. A 5 gallon/18.9-litre pail offers ample coverage.
Q: Shipping in Australia and New Zealand?
A: Yes, we offer shipping around Australia, however Rust Grip® is considered a low-grade dangerous good and incurs a higher transportation cost. Dangerous good freight to New Zealand is much higher and includes extra duties due to NZ Customs.
Q: Can I test it before committing to a large quantity?
A: Absolutely! We sell decanted 1 litre tins that will cover 2.5m2 – 3.3m2 (while stock is available).
Q: What colour is Rust Grip?
A: Rust Grip® is a silver/grey colour and cannot be tinted but can be over-coated.
Q: Is Rust Grip® safe around water and sensitive environments?
A: Once Rust Grip® as cured it is completely inert and therefore safe for use in marine environments and around waterways.
Q: Can Rust Grip® be over-coated?
A: Yes, either in solvent or water-based coatings. If you’re looking for a strong ‘one-coat’ system we recommend applying the extra coats of Rust Grip® or top coat (solvent) in the same application window based on humidity and temperature.
