Insulating and heat reflective paint for garage and roller doors

There are times when your roller door or garage door just gets too hot. This heat loads and transfers into the home making summers very difficult indeed.

Thankfully there is an answer with Super Therm® and Sunshield closed film multi-ceramics thermal insulation coating. Super Therm® is a type of insulating coating designed to provide thermal insulation for various surfaces, including garage doors. It utilizes advanced technology to achieve its insulating properties. Here’s how Super Therm® works to insulate a garage door:

  1. Ceramics: Super Therm® contains ceramic compounds (not just microspheres) that act as insulating agents. These compounds have a high resistance to heat transfer, which means they can effectively block the transfer of heat through the coated surface. This is considered a Closed insulation coating as it doesn’t rely on air gap fillers to slow heat transfer but blocks and stops the heat load.
  2. Infrared Compound: The coating also includes special reflective ceramics that help to reflect infrared and block the radiation. When sunlight or heat energy strikes the surface, these compounds bounce 99% of the infrared heat back, preventing it from entering the garage space.
  3. Blocking Heat: Super Therm® creates a barrier on the garage door’s surface, which helps block the penetration of heat from the outside. This barrier reduces the amount of heat that can pass through the door, thus helping to maintain a more stable and comfortable temperature inside the garage. Essentially the door remains near ambient, not super hot.
  4. UV Resistance: Super Therm® is designed to block 99% of UV radiation, which helps in preventing degradation and breakdown of the coating over time due to sun exposure. The coating was designed for industrial use in some of the toughest environments on the globe so quality of urethanes that bind the coating are critical for proven longevity.
  5. Energy Reduction: By reducing the heat transfer through the garage door, Super Therm® helps to keep the interior cooler during hot weather. Painting on the inside also helps heat loss reduction during cold weather. This can result in energy reductions as the need for heating and cooling is reduced.
  6. Weather Protection: Besides its insulating properties, Super Therm® can also act as a protective layer for the garage door, shielding it from weather-related damage and extending its lifespan.

It’s important to note that while Super Therm® provides some degree of insulation, its effectiveness may vary depending on factors such as the thickness of the coating, the condition of the garage door, and the local climate. Super Therm® can still be a beneficial option to enhance the energy efficiency of the garage and increase comfort within the space if you’re struggling with heat load from western facing sun.

To insulate a garage roller door with Super Therm® or Sunshield, you can follow these steps:

  1. Gather Materials: You’ll need Super Therm® insulating coating with a spread rate of 2.4m2 per litre.
  2. Prepare the Surface: Ensure that the roller door’s surface is clean and free from dust, dirt, and any loose paint. Use a mild detergent to wash the surface and let it dry completely or ideally pressure clean.
  3. Masking: Use painter’s tape to mask off any areas you don’t want to coat, such as handles, locks, and other hardware.
  4. Mix the Super Therm® Coating: Follow the instructions to mix the Super Therm® coating properly. Stir the product thoroughly to achieve a consistent texture for 4-5 minutes.
  5. Apply the Super Therm® Coating: Use a paintbrush, roller or airless spray gun to apply the Super Therm coating evenly over the surface of the garage roller door. Start from the top and work your way down, applying a smooth and even layer. Make sure there are no gaps or uneven spots.
  6. Allow Drying Time: Give the Super Therm® coating sufficient time to dry according to the guidelines. This might vary depending on the environmental conditions and the specific product used.
  7. Add Additional Coats (Optional): Depending on the level of insulation desired, you may apply additional coats of Super Therm®. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the time interval between coats. The recommended dry film thickness is 250 microns or 425 microns wet.
  8. Remove Masking: Once the coating is dry, carefully remove the painter’s tape from the areas you masked off.
  9. Clean Up: Clean your equipment and tools with water.
  10. Maintenance: Super Therm® coating is generally durable, but it’s essential to perform regular maintenance to ensure its longevity and effectiveness. Clean the coated surface periodically to remove any dirt or debris that may accumulate over time.

Always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the Super Therm® product you are using for the best results and to ensure safety during application. Keep in mind that while Super Therm® can provide insulation benefits, it will help improve the thermal properties of your garage door.
